What to do if you’ve had a bike accident

By Logan Quirk

If you ride a bike for work or pleasure, you already know just how pleasant it can be. After all, what else could be better than cycling along Venice Beach or zipping through the traffic of Downtown while avoiding the worst congestion? Cycling is great for health and fitness, but it can be dangerous.

If you have been injured in a bike accident while cycling for business or leisure, you are not alone. Across the US, 45,000 bicyclists were injured in traffic in 2015 alone. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, bicycle-related accidents are on the rise. In 2012 , 726 people were killed in bicycle related crashes. This number was up from the 682 bicycle fatalities that were reported in 2011. One thing is for certain – you need to be careful when you’re on your bike.

Cycling through a big city like Los Angeles definitely has its benefits, but you do need to be careful and ensure that you are safe. Obey the rules of the road, wear a helmet and never cycle while intoxicated.

What are the California Bicycle Laws?

California Vehicle Code VC 21201 details all of the California Cycling laws. It includes all aspects of riding a bike in LA, including:

  • You must have functional brakes – It is illegal (not to mention very dangerous) to ride a bike that does not have functioning brakes.
  • Your handlebars must be the right size, and not rise above your shoulder height.

There are additional requirements about riding at night:

  •  Your bike must have either a lamp or headlight that is visible from 300 feet to the front.
  •  The rear of your bike must have a red reflector that can be seen from at least 500 feet away.
  •  Your bike pedals must have either white or yellow reflectors.
